On 22nd November, the Kirkley People’s Forum marked Benjamin Britten’s birthday with a lively and heartwarming Bake-a-Cake event held at the Kirkley Centre. The event drew an enthusiastic crowd who enjoyed delicious homemade cakes and hot drinks in a cheerful atmosphere. Guests could either savor their treats on-site or purchase a tempting selection to take home.

The highlight of the day came with a spirited rendition of “Happy Birthday” in honour of the legendary composer. It was during this moment of celebration that Ruth, from the Britten as a Boy committee shared the incredible news: they had reached their ambitious £110,000 fundraising goal to begin production of the long-awaited bronze statue of Benjamin Britten. The room erupted in applause, a fitting tribute to both Britten’s legacy and the community’s unwavering dedication to this monumental project.
